Is a school placement consultant worth it?
For competitive independent and grammar school applications, the evidence is clear: families who work with an experienced consultant achieve materially better outcomes than those who navigate the process alone. 95% of Ariston students secure their first-choice school — a rate that reflects honest school selection as much as expert preparation.
The UK school admissions landscape has become significantly more competitive over the past decade. Oversubscribed grammar schools, independent schools running their own entrance exams and interviews, and a state admissions system with opaque catchment boundaries all create opportunities for families who know the system — and traps for those who don't. A consultant's job is to make sure you're in the first group.
What you get with a consultant
An honest assessment of your child's realistic options, a shortlist of schools that genuinely fit, expert exam preparation, interview coaching, and a managed application process. No missed deadlines, no wasted applications to the wrong schools.
What most families get without one
Applications to schools that aren't the right fit, under-preparation for entrance exams, missed early registration windows, and interview coaching that focuses on the wrong things. We regularly hear from families who contact us after an avoidable rejection.
When it matters most
Competitive grammar and selective independent schools — where the difference between success and rejection is preparation quality. International families unfamiliar with UK admissions. Any family applying under time pressure due to relocation.
Our track record
95% of Ariston students are placed at their first-choice school. We only recommend schools where the fit is genuine and admission is realistic — which is why our success rate is high and our advice is sometimes not what families initially want to hear.
When to apply — UK school entry points explained
UK schools have fixed entry points with specific timelines. Missing an early registration window or applying too late for competitive schools is one of the most common and costly mistakes families make.
Reception / Year 1 (age 4–5)
State school applications open in September for the following September entry, with a national deadline typically in mid-January. The most sought-after independent schools often require registration 2–3 years ahead. Start early.
Year 3 (age 7) — Junior / Prep entry
The main entry point for independent prep and junior schools. Assessments typically run January–February of Year 2, with offers in February. Register 12–18 months in advance. Preparation for literacy and numeracy assessments is essential.
Year 7 (age 11) — Grammar & Senior Independent
The most competitive entry point in UK education. Grammar school 11+ exams take place in September–October of Year 6. Independent senior school assessments run January–February of Year 6, with offers in March. 11+ preparation should begin in Year 5 at the latest.
Year 9 (age 13) — 13+ / Common Entrance
The traditional entry point for leading independent boarding and day schools. Common Entrance exams take place in June of Year 8. Pre-testing by the destination school often happens 18 months earlier, in Year 7. Registration should begin in Year 6.
Year 12 (age 16) — Sixth Form entry
Many top independent schools have a significant sixth form intake. Applications typically open in autumn of Year 11, with conditional offers in January–February. Entry usually requires predicted grade 7+ at GCSE in chosen A-level subjects.
In-year / mid-term entry
For relocating families who need a place immediately. State in-year applications are processed on a rolling basis by the local authority. Independent schools manage their own mid-year availability. Contact us immediately — we can move quickly in urgent situations.
What does school placement consultancy cost?
School placement consultancy fees in the UK vary depending on the scope of support — the number of schools targeted, the entry point, and whether entrance exam preparation is included alongside the admissions guidance.
At Ariston, we discuss fees transparently on your free initial call once we understand your situation. What we can say upfront: the cost of professional guidance is substantially less than a wasted application year. A rejected application to the wrong school, or a missed deadline that pushes entry back twelve months, carries a far higher cost for most families than any consultancy fee.
What affects the fee
Number of schools you're applying to, the entry point (Reception vs Year 7 vs boarding vs sixth form), whether entrance exam tutoring is included, timeline urgency, and whether you need ongoing support throughout the process.
What's always included
Discovery call, written school shortlist with honest likelihood assessments, application management, entrance exam preparation coordination, interview coaching, and offer evaluation. We handle the process end-to-end — not just the initial advice.
From first call to first day

School placement — frequently asked questions
What does a school placement consultant do?
A school placement consultant guides families through the UK school admissions process from start to finish. This includes assessing your child’s academic profile and learning style, identifying schools that genuinely match their needs, managing applications, coordinating entrance exam preparation, and coaching for interviews. The goal is to maximise the likelihood of securing a place at the right school — not just any school.
When should I start the school placement process?
For independent school entry, we recommend starting 12–18 months before your target entry date. For state and grammar school entry, the main admissions round opens in September. If you need a place urgently due to relocation, contact us immediately — in-year admissions is a rolling process and we can move quickly.
Do you work with international and relocating families?
Yes — working with international and relocating families is a core part of what we do. We work with families relocating from Spain, the UAE, the US, Singapore, and across Europe, and we can manage the full admissions process remotely before your family arrives in the UK.
Can you help with grammar school and 11+ preparation?
Yes. Grammar school entry requires specific 11+ preparation, which varies by region. We assess your child’s current level, identify the right grammar schools, and provide targeted preparation through our tutors — covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, maths, and English depending on the exam board.
Do you help with boarding school admissions?
Yes. We manage the full boarding school placement process for UK and international families — from initial shortlisting and school visits to application management, Common Entrance preparation, and interview coaching.
What is your school placement success rate?
95% of the students we work with are placed at their first-choice school. We only recommend schools where we believe the fit is strong and admission is realistic, and we give honest assessments of likelihood at every stage.
How is using a consultant different from applying directly?
A consultant brings knowledge of how individual schools assess applicants, what makes a strong interview candidate, and how to avoid common mistakes. Families who apply without guidance frequently target the wrong schools, underprepare for entrance exams, or miss key deadlines.
