Spanish students had the best results day of any subject in 2026 — top grades (7, 8 and 9) jumped 6.9 percentage points on 2025, the single biggest rise of any GCSE. Maths wasn’t far behind, up 3.7 points. Meanwhile, both English qualifications went the other way. Here’s what the 2026 JCQ data actually shows, subject by subject.
Which Subjects Went Up
Five subjects saw a real increase in the share of entries awarded grade 7 or above:

Spanish’s jump isn’t a fluke — 2026 was the first year students sat the new language GCSE specifications introduced in 2024, and Ofqual had explicitly said it would adjust grade boundaries so this cohort was “neither advantaged nor disadvantaged” by being first through the new spec. The size of the increase suggests boundaries landed on the generous side. Maths, chemistry and physics all improving together points to a stronger-performing science and numeracy cohort overall, not one subject having an easy year in isolation.
Which Subjects Went Down
The English subjects had a harder year. English Literature fell 2.0 percentage points at grade 7+, Art and Design dropped 1.7 points, and English Language slipped 0.5 points. Biology and History stayed essentially flat with no meaningful change. If your child is resitting or currently studying English Literature or Art and Design, this is worth flagging directly with their teacher — a national dip in top grades usually means grade boundaries moved up to compensate, which changes how many raw marks separate a 6 from a 7.
The National Picture
Across all subjects, 22.0% of GCSE entries were awarded grade 7 or above in 2026, up marginally from 21.9% in 2025. The very top grade, 9, went to 5.0% of entries — a small dip from 5.1% the year before. The overall pass rate (grade 4 and above) held roughly steady at 67.3%, down from 67.4%. In short: national attainment barely moved, but that stability hides real swings underneath at subject level — exactly the kind of detail a headline pass-rate figure won’t tell you.
What This Means for Your Revision Strategy
These figures aren’t just news — they’re a planning tool. If a subject’s top-grade rate rose nationally, grade boundaries were typically set to keep outcomes broadly consistent with previous years, so don’t assume the subject got “easier.” What matters more is the trend within your own subject: STEM subjects (maths, chemistry, physics) rewarded strong performers more visibly this year, while English Literature and Art and Design became slightly more competitive at the top. Talk to your teachers about where your mock results sit relative to this year’s grade boundaries for your specific exam board — that comparison is far more useful than the national average on its own.
