Common report phrases — decoded

Even without the tool, here's what teachers usually mean when they use these phrases.

"Making good progress"

Doing fine but not excelling. The teacher is content — but it's not a glowing report. There's room to push further.

"Exceeding the expected standard"

Your child is working ahead of where they need to be for their year group. A genuine positive — worth acknowledging.

"Meeting the expected standard"

On track, average. Nothing to panic about — but nothing to be complacent about either. Could slip if effort drops.

"Working towards the expected standard"

Below grade level. This is how teachers flag a child who needs support without using the word "struggling." Take it seriously.

"Would benefit from..."

Teacher speak for "there is a gap here." They're being diplomatic. Whatever follows is a specific concern that needs addressing.

"Could challenge themselves more"

Has the ability but isn't applying it. Often a motivation or confidence issue, not a knowledge gap. Worth a conversation at home.

"Could develop greater resilience"

Gives up when things get hard. In exam subjects this is a significant flag — difficulty is unavoidable, and giving up costs marks.

"Greater independence would be beneficial"

Relies too heavily on the teacher. Exams are done alone — independent problem-solving is a skill that needs to be practised now.

"Engagement could be improved"

Not consistently paying attention or contributing in class. Could reflect boredom (push them harder) or something worth looking into.

"With continued support"

A polite signal that this child needs ongoing help — at home, at school, or from a tutor. Progress may have depended on support so far.

"A valued member of the class"

Well-behaved and contributes positively. Often a polite way of saying the child is good company without much academic to report. Look at what else is — or isn't — said.

"Shows resilience and determination"

A genuine compliment. Resilience is one of the most reliable predictors of exam performance. This child handles difficulty and keeps going.
